Pick maximum of 5 things to focus on, avoid others at all cost
Remember this on my previous post. It’s actually not my original idea. I maybe have read or heard it somewhere in one of my favourite podcasts. Clarity is important. So like I always, I just went to Google to learn more, Google knows everything.
Let me summarize the story for you.
The Story of Mike Flint
Mike Flint, Buffet’s personal airplane pilot for 10 years discussed about his career when his boss demonstrated this exercise to help him find his priorities. It’s a 5-step simple process.
Step 1: Write down your top 25 career goals. (It could be long term or short term)
Step 2: Review the list and circle the top 5 goals.
Step 3: Now you have 2 lists. The 5 items is List A and the 20 items he had not been circled is List B.
Step 4: Marry your priorities
For Flint, he said that he would start working on his top 5 goals right away. And that’s when Buffett asked him about the second list, “And what about the ones you didn’t circle?”
Flint replied, “Well, the top 5 are my primary focus, but the other 20 come in a close second. They are still important so I’ll work on those intermittently as I see fit. They are not as urgent, but I still plan to give them a dedicated effort.”
on which Buffett replied, “No. You’ve got it wrong, Mike. Everything you didn’t circle just became your Avoid-At-All-Cost list. No matter what, these things get no attention from you until you’ve succeeded with your top 5.”
So Step 5 sounds like this:-
Step 5: Know your ‘Avoid at all Cost List‘ and stick to it.
This hits me well because I always jump from one thing to another whether in my career, relationship, side hustle of even hobbies. I realize I can be easily inspired by random things and got distracted from my current path and focus.
So, today I’m also writing a now page to help me stay laser-focused on the things that are important to me.
Writing a ‘Now Page’
What is a “now page”?
Most websites have a link that says “about”. It goes to a page that tells you something about the background of this person or business. For short, people just call it an “about page”.
Most websites have a link that says “contact”. It goes to a page that tells you how to contact this person or business. For short, people just call it a “contact page”.
So a website with a link that says “now” goes to a page that tells you what this person is focused on at this point in their life. For short, we call it a “now page”. (nownownow.com)
That’s all from me today and thank you for reading. This is my now page if you’re interested to know what I’m currently up to.. and
What are your ‘now’ things?
