Turning Stumbles into Stepping Stones

Mistakes bring guilt, shame, and the burden of consequences; they are inevitably painful. We may believe we’ve tried our best, yet still failed. The urge to bury our face in the ground and avoid speaking of our missteps is strong.

I know this feeling well. The road often seems bumpy, and I have frequently thought there must be something wrong with me – experiencing fall after fall while wondering why others seem to have it smoother. Can I hide now? Can I just stay in my room, avoiding everything for fear of breaking whatever I touch? I once treated my entire life like a failure due to my mistakes.

However, whether mistakes are minor, complex, or unavoidable, it is crucial to learn from them. They don’t happen merely to make us feel or look bad. In fact, making mistakes is a vital part of growth. What we often fail to realise about repeatedly falling is that each fall presents an opportunity to rise, and rising is an immensely powerful act.

I hope that in the coming year, you make mistakes. Because if you are making mistakes, then you are creating new things, trying new things, learning, living, pushing yourself, changing yourself, and changing your world. You’re doing things you’ve never done before, and more importantly, you’re doing something.

Accepting Your Mistakes

Admitting a mistake can be challenging, especially if it hurts your ego, but it is the first step to learning from it. There is no other way around this. Once you’ve admitted your mistake, forgive yourself. If your mistake affected others, apologise. Trust me, you need this more than those you’ve affected. Let go of the guilt and embrace the past. Apologising is a humbling act that encourages improvement in yourself and others.

Avoiding Justification

Even if the mistake was shared with others, avoid blaming people or circumstances. Owning your mistake makes you more respectable and gives you the power to improve. This accountability fosters personal growth and resilience.

Investigating the Cause

Mistakes are rarely intentional; no one aims to fail. Therefore, ask questions and listen to understand the root cause of the mistake. Identifying what led to the error helps prevent it from recurring. This investigative process is crucial for meaningful learning and development.

Making a Plan

After understanding the situation and identifying the root cause, create a plan to fix the damages. More importantly, implement safety measures to avoid repeating the same mistake. Planning and preparation are key to transforming a setback into a valuable learning experience.

Moving On

Dwelling on your mistake for too long can damage your self-esteem and motivation. It’s not worth investing time and emotion in things you cannot change. Stop worrying about what others think of you and focus on self-improvement. After all, nobody’s perfect. Move on and live your most beautiful life.
