The Curious Case of the Three Drinks

I had an interesting day at the office today with the storytellers from the agency we’re collaborating with for our festive campaigns.

One of them caught my attention with three different drinks in front of her in the meeting room.

One. A striking orange paper cup with a contrasting bear icon on two sides. Coffee, I supposed.

Two. A minimalist water bottle containing greenish water with a tea bag floating in it.

Three. An empty McCafe disposable plastic cup. She probably had an iced latte in the morning. My colleague, Hidayah, who set up the meeting, ordered McDonald’s breakfast for everyone.

In addition to the drinks, she had a vape, a phone so large it could be mistaken for a power bank, and a spiral notebook much larger than the A5-sized ones everyone else had. I couldn’t help but wonder what she wrote in it.

As she presented her proposal, her energy was palpable, packed with emotions and animated body movements. Her knee-length cardigan moved swiftly like a sheer curtain as she jumped forward and back. Her tattooed hands swung—sometimes like rising smoke, sometimes like flapping wings. I realised that most of the stories I’d heard these past two weeks involved a lot of sound effects, and hers was no exception.

Pfff pfff. Swishy swish. Ding dong. Bum bum.

Her storytelling was not just auditory but also visual and kinesthetic, creating a dynamic and engaging presentation. It was an embodiment of how storytelling is not merely about the words we use but also how we use our bodies and surroundings to convey a message.

In retrospect, the drinks on the table seemed to reflect her multifaceted personality—a combination of energy, creativity, and a hint of unpredictability.
