The Art of Decluttering and Organising Any Storage Unit

No matter how many storage or organisation units you have, your belongings are still overflowing from their ‘houses’ and you can’t seem to get them in order. Here are three simple steps to declutter your possessions and organise any storage unit in your home.

Storage units refer to your wardrobe, kitchen cabinet, makeup drawer, office drawer, refrigerator, etc.

Step 1: Empty Everything Out

Take out all the items from the storage unit. Place them on the floor or a clean table. This allows you to see everything you have and assess the space you’re working with.

Step 2: Categorise Your Items

Categorise the items. For example, if you’re dealing with your wardrobe, the categories might include trousers, tops, undergarments, etc. This step helps in understanding what you own and how much you have of each type.

Step 3: Sort into Three Groups

Go through each category one by one and make three groups/piles:

  • Throw/Donate/Sell: Items that are broken, damaged, no longer used, or have no intention to use soon. For broken and damaged items, you can either dispose of them or, if possible, recycle or upcycle. For items in good condition, consider donating or selling them. Ultimately, this group is meant to be removed from your house.
  • Not Sure: Items that you are no longer using but think you might want to use in the near future. Keep these in a box and label it with today’s date. Set a timeframe, such as 3 to 6 months. If you haven’t used them by the end of this period, they can be transferred to the Throw/Donate/Sell group.
  • Keep: Organise these items back into your storage unit, preferably based on their categories.

By following these steps, you can ensure your belongings are well-organised and consist only of things you truly use and love. Happy organising!
