My Journey with Weekly Exercise

One of my main goals this year is to exercise once a week. I’ve discovered that goals are more achievable when set as habits. For instance, rather than aiming to become a better writer, my goal is to write daily. Similarly, instead of striving to reach a specific body weight, my objective is to exercise weekly.

Progress So Far

It’s too early to say whether I will accomplish these goals, but so far, I’m grateful that I haven’t missed a week since the first week of January 2020. The consistency has been encouraging, and I’m optimistic about maintaining this habit throughout the year.

The types of exercises I engage in vary – from swimming and jogging to running on the treadmill at the gym, dancing at home, and attending Zumba classes with my colleagues. When I’m too busy for these activities, I opt for 10-15 minutes of yoga. This variety keeps my routine interesting and caters to different aspects of fitness.

Discovering Zumba

In February, I managed to attend Zumba classes every week. These sessions were incredibly fun and invigorating, and I learned a few things about myself. I realised that I genuinely love dancing, and who doesn’t? However, I also became aware of my mental blocks around dancing, such as coordinating my arms and legs and distinguishing my left from my right.

Staying Consistent

I’ve noticed that I feel more comfortable with masculine dance moves compared to feminine ones, like those influenced by belly dance and salsa. Perhaps it’s due to shyness, or maybe these moves are just more challenging for me. Nonetheless, recognising these preferences and challenges has been an enlightening part of my fitness journey.

As I continue this journey, I hope to overcome these mental blocks and enjoy the full spectrum of dance and exercise. The key is to stay consistent and embrace the process, no matter how small the progress may seem.
