If minimalism can do one thing for us, it is to reduce possessions and increase experiences. As we no longer use our resources (time, money, space, and energy) to acquire material things, we start using them for experiences. Here is a list of experiences I’ve gained by focusing less on trivial possessions:
Extended Unpaid Leave
I took an extended unpaid leave after working for 5-6 years. This break allowed me to explore new opportunities and reset my priorities. It was a time of self-discovery and relaxation, providing me with the space to think about my future goals. During this period, I engaged in various activities that I had previously neglected due to work commitments, such as spending quality time with family, pursuing hobbies, and travelling.
Working from Home
I ventured into freelance writing, social media marketing, and hijab modelling. These roles provided me with flexibility and a new sense of purpose. Working from home allowed me to create a balanced work-life routine, where I could manage professional tasks without compromising personal time. I developed new skills, networked with professionals from diverse fields, and gained valuable experience in managing projects independently.
Public Speaking
I delivered speeches on minimalism at TEDx, The Star WOW Fiesta, and MyCorps, a humanitarian event. These experiences helped me grow as a public speaker and share my minimalist journey with others. Preparing for these events required extensive research and practice, which improved my communication skills and boosted my confidence. Engaging with audiences and receiving their feedback was rewarding, as it allowed me to connect with like-minded individuals and inspire others to adopt a minimalist lifestyle.
Publishing My Book
I published my book on Amazon and Kindle, fulfilling a long-held dream of becoming an author. The process of writing, editing, and publishing the book was challenging yet immensely rewarding. Seeing my work in print and receiving positive reviews from readers was an incredible experience. It not only validated my efforts but also motivated me to continue writing and sharing my thoughts with a wider audience.
Performing Spoken Word Poetry
I performed spoken word poetry, expressing my thoughts and emotions creatively. This artistic outlet allowed me to explore and articulate my innermost feelings through powerful and evocative language. Participating in poetry slams and open mic events introduced me to a community of talented artists and poets, fostering a sense of camaraderie and mutual support. Performing live in front of an audience helped me overcome stage fright and refine my performance skills, making each recital a memorable experience.
Reading a Book a Week
I committed to reading a book a week, enriching my knowledge and broadening my perspectives. This habit expanded my understanding of various subjects, from fiction and history to science and self-help. Each book offered new insights and inspired me to think critically and creatively.
Social Media Detox
I disconnected from social media for a week straight whenever I needed to reset and recharge. This practice brought more mindfulness and allowed me to focus on the present moment. Reducing digital distractions helped me become more aware of my thoughts and feelings, leading to a greater sense of clarity and inner peace. It also improved my productivity and relationships, as I could devote more attention to meaningful interactions.
Travelling
I travelled more, either solo, with my partner, or with my children. These trips, whether short or extended, brought new experiences and memories. Exploring new places, cultures, and cuisines broadened my horizons and enriched my life in countless ways.
Embracing My Passions
I stopped doing things I didn’t enjoy and focused more on what I love, such as writing, designing, and engaging in art-related activities. This shift in priorities allowed me to channel my energy and creativity into projects that brought me joy and fulfillment. This change also opened up opportunities for collaboration and learning within my areas of passion.
Personal Growth
I learned to accept mistakes and be okay with being wrong. This acceptance helped me try things I was previously afraid of and grow from those experiences. Embracing failure as a learning opportunity allowed me to develop resilience and adaptability. Additionally, I cultivated a better sense of gratitude, which often snowballed into happiness and the attraction of more positive things into my life. My days are not always perfect, but my thought patterns now incline towards positivity. I also experienced rapid self-growth by no longer caring about external validation or what others thought of me. This mindset shift enabled me to focus on my personal development and pursue my goals with confidence and determination.
Minimalism has helped me to create focus around the things, people, and causes that are important and meaningful to me. For that, I’m happy and grateful.
