Have you ever had that nagging doubt about whether you’re truly a creative person?
Yeah, me too.
I’ve come to realise something profound: creativity isn’t just about creating masterpieces; it’s about the process, the journey, and the constant motion of putting things out there, whether they’re perfect or not.
Unlocking Creativity
Reading “The Creative Act: A Way of Being” by Rick Rubin felt like having a heart-to-heart chat with a wise friend who understands the essence of creativity. Rubin’s book delves deeply into what it means to be creative.
It’s about baring your soul, expressing your unique perspective, and making art that matters because it’s personal. One of my favourite quotes from the book is, “The personal is what makes art matter.” It hits home, doesn’t it? It’s not about how technically skilled you are; it’s about pouring your heart into your craft.
Bursts of Inspiration
Lines like “Great art is created through freedom of self-expression and received with freedom of individual interpretation” are like little bursts of inspiration that make you go, “Yes! That’s it!” Rubin’s insights resonate deeply, offering validation and encouragement to anyone on their creative journey. It’s the kind of book that sticks with you, urging you to share its wisdom with everyone you know.
The more you immerse yourself in it, the more you realise the profound truth in his words.
Should I get the Physical Book?
I started off reading the e-book version and was so captivated that I’m now considering getting the physical book as well. There’s something uniquely satisfying about having a tangible copy on my shelf, ready to flip through whenever I’m feeling stuck or in need of a creative boost.
If you’re ever in doubt about your creative abilities or need a reminder of the beauty of the creative process, I highly recommend picking up “The Creative Act: A Way of Being” by Rick Rubin.
